HGB hosts annual HealthFest – free for the community

The annual HGB HealthFest is 8 a.m. to 11: 30 a.m., Saturday, March 3, at Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital. It offers free screenings, health information and resources, plus a variety of interactive activities for individuals and families.

Everyone receives a “passport” at check-in, featuring a map to more than 50 exhibits and activities. There will also be several physicians from HGB on hand for conversation and screenings. Some past screenings, such as the carotid screening, that served only a small number of community members, have been replaced by new screenings that can serve many more people. Participants will be able to:
·         Check blood pressure
·         Learn about bone density
·         Check balance and grip strength
·         Learn about menopause or osteoporosis
·         Check cholesterol and blood sugar levels
·         Learn about new services for women
·         Gain awareness about cancer and its treatments
·         Enjoy many activities for families and children
·         Enter various prize drawings

Families will enjoy tours of the EMS ambulance and the fire truck throughout the event, as well as an extrication demonstration at 11:30 a.m. in the hospital parking lot. The demo shows how paramedics extract victims following a car crash. Following HealthFest there will be a Youth Walk, along with a brief education presentation and prizes, at AL!VE, 800 W. Lawrence Avenue in Charlotte, at 12:30 p.m.

“All of the health screenings and information provided at HealthFest are offered at no charge as a benefit to our local communities,” said Matt Rush, HGB president and CEO. “We are thankful to our HGB volunteers, employees and physicians, all of whom donate their time on this special day to help our communities learn ways to lead healthier lives.”

HealthFest is the finale event for “Community Vitality Week,” which kicks off Sunday, Feb. 26, with The Women’s Health Experience at AL!VE. There are daily opportunities during the week offered by the Charlotte Aquatic Center, Experience Art, The Eaton Area Senior Center and AL!VE. Visit Annual Events at www.hgbhealth.com for more details.

HealthFest events take place at the hospital’s main building at 321 E. Harris Street in Charlotte. Visitors can park in the main parking lot and enter through the Outpatient Surgery / Heart Station entrance.
