Annual Diabetes Forum focuses on disease management during American Diabetes Month

To highlight American Diabetes Month, HGB is hosting its Annual Diabetes Forum Tuesday, Nov. 17 at AL!VE.

The keynote speaker at the annual event is HGB family physician, Dr. Linda Chermak, of Family Care Specialists. Dr. Chermak specializes in preventive medicine and treats patients of all ages, with a special interest in geratrics. She will discuss diabetes management and the importance of physical activity, along with staff from MOVE, AL!VE’s fitness center.

There are 30 million children and adults in the United States who have diabetes, and another 86 million have pre-diabetes according to the American Diabetes Association. The most common form of the disease – Type 2 – is when the body does not use insulin properly, making it hard to maintain normal blood glucose levels. Over time, high glucose levels can hurt the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart.

The most important strategy to lower the risk of diabetes is to maintain a normal weight through healthy eating and staying active. In addition to how to manage and prevent diabetes, Dr. Chermak and the MOVE staff members will also answer questions about safe and healthy exercise.

HGB’s Diabetes Forum will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 17, at AL!VE located at 800 W. Lawrence Ave. in Charlotte, Mich. Light snacks and refreshments will be served. Please register for the presentation at (517) 543-1050, ext. 1208 no later than Thursday, Nov. 12.
