HGB employees donate Christmas gift to food basket program

More than 50 employees from Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital donated their annual Christmas gift to the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce’s Holiday Food Basket Project. Their contribution of $1,530 went toward providing food for area families in need.

"Because of the generosity of the Hayes Green Beach employees, we were able to provide food for almost 600 families," said Ann Garvey, Charlotte Chamber of Commerce executive director and chair of the Charlotte Holiday Food Basket Project. "And it was more challenging to provide for all the families this year because, while the number of households remained the same, we saw the number of family members increase for the first time in five years."

Each year HGB employees receive a certificate to the Charlotte IGA for a holiday ham, turkey or fruit basket. They have the option to return the certificate to Human Resources as a donation to the holiday food basket program. HGB matches each employee’s contribution.

"We have a significant number of employees who return their holiday gift to ensure local families get a nice holiday meal who might not be able to afford one otherwise," said Jennifer Bucienski, HGB human resources director. "It’s a great program and the perfect way to share our staff’s generosity."

HGB has supported the Chamber’s Holiday Food Basket Project for three years. Donations have totaled more than $4,500.

The check, presented Thursday, Dec. 22, was made to the Charlotte IGA.

"By providing credit at the Charlotte IGA it’s a double-win," Garvey said. "We buy locally and get discounted prices on the items we need to give families – potatoes, canned goods and protein in every basket."
