HGB public workshop focuses on fall prevention and building confidence

The fear of falling, whether due to age or health conditions, is a common fear that can actually limit a person's mobility. It can result in a loss of confidence, reduced activity and social interaction, as well as decreased strength, depression, increased frailty and, ultimately, a loss of independence.

Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital is offering The Matter of Balance Workshop this fall from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Fridays, at the AL!VE meeting room at 800 W. Lawrence Ave. The program begins Friday, Sept. 16, and ends Friday, Nov. 4. Family members are welcome to attend as well. The entire 8-week program is $39 for members of the Hayes Green Beach Wellness Center and $49 for non-members.

Participants who sign up for the workshop are empowered by building fall prevention skills and increasing confidence. Previous attendees have significantly reduced the fear of falling, increased their sense of control over falls, and enhanced strength and quality of life.

Elaine Scribner facilitates the workshop and explores facts about falls and shares exercises that improve strength and balance. Scribner is a nurse and has worked at the health department and taught at Lansing Community College and Michigan State University. She also leads Tai Chi and stress management classes at the HGB Wellness Center. Call (517) 543-9575 to register for the workshop – space is limited. Participants should plan to dress comfortably.
